Google’s Sunnyvale campus transforms two deep, dim research buildings into a workplace organized around daylight, fresh air, and landscape. New courtyards, skylights, and an oculus bring the outdoors into daily movement, while responsive systems and water strategies improve performance. Nature becomes the infrastructure that reconnects people with the campus.

Daylight Rewrites the Campus
A new circulation route is organized around three openings to the sky: an existing courtyard, an enlarged skylight, and a dramatic oculus cut through the roof and structure. Each acts as both landmark and gathering place. In the courtyard, a preserved native oak anchors a floating stair beside a coffee bar and micro-kitchen. Beneath the skylight, an amphitheater stair unfolds into lounges, counters, and tables that support quiet work or larger gatherings. At the oculus, glazed meeting rooms, planted terraces, and a curved outdoor stair draw people toward open air. The sequence makes a formerly deep floorplate intuitive, social, and bright.

Performance Behaves Like a Living System
Exterior shades respond automatically to heat and glare, making environmental performance visible through subtle movement. The campus runs on 100 percent renewable energy, treats and recycles water onsite, and captures an average of 260,000 gallons of rainwater annually. Local and salvaged materials were prioritized, and red-list ingredients were avoided. Work areas are balanced by training rooms, cafés, courtyards, a video studio, game room, and quieter retreats. A Google Cloud gallery and changing digital-cloud ceiling connect organizational history with the natural concept. The transformed campus operates less like a sealed office and more like a responsive system shaped by people, climate, and change.
